Are You Self Sabotaging?

I don’t really like to use the word “Sabotage”.

To be honest, I love the way it sounds.  It kind of just rolls off the tongue…

But I hate using the word because it means that we’re doing something that we know we shouldn’t be.

We’re all smart and we all know better.

(Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, I can be brutally honest.)

But we’re all capable of the most efficient form of sabotage when we aim to sabotage ourselves.

And yes I do mean when we do it consciously or unconsciously.

Whether you know it or not, there are simple ways that you get in your own way AND there are easy ways to stop living in that world and find your way into a much happier and healthier world.

How?

I’ve put together a list of the top reasons why you are NOT losing weight.  These are not meant to be all encompassing, but a taste of what’s been on your sabotage plate.

Top 9 Reasons Why You Are NOT Losing Weight

1. You’re not being honest with the food that you’re eating or the total calories that you’re taking in each day. (I.e. you are underestimating yourself!)

2. You’re not being honest with the exercise that you’re doing or the calories that you’re burning. (I.e. now you’re overestimating yourself!)

3. You’re genetics are keeping you at a certain weight.  (Plain and simple but you are not using genetics as a crutch or an excuse- see number 4.)

4.  You’re too busy making excuses as to why you’re not losing weight to actually make the simple changes to lose weight.  You blame your genetics, work, your family, your dog, your significant other or lack there of.  You get the point.

5. Your hormones are out of whack.  By hormones, I mean naturally occurring hormones in your body such as estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, insulin, cortisol, etc. AND you’re not under a medical doctor’s care or being pro-active about it.

6.  You don’t have enough muscle on your frame.  Weight training helps- big time!  More muscle means more calories burned both at rest and during exercise.

7. You’re getting older and are falling prey to the slowing down of your metabolism.  Since there’s no fountain of youth, keep your body and mind young through exercise.  Think hitting the gym or going for a walk and then a nice game of scrabble or sudoku.

8. You’re not consistent.  Maintaining healthy habits sometimes unfortunately doesn’t cut it.  You need to make conscious decisions to be healthy and living healthy most days, if not every day.

9. You constantly deprive yourself.  Deprivation is often the causes of many, many food binges- among other things.  Learn to deal with cravings, this way going cold-turkey won’t be the only way to deal with food.

Your Challenge, if you choose to Accept it!

1.   Look at the list above and find out what your biggest issue is.  Can you do one little thing to change that today?  If so, do it.  If not, how can you do it and when can you do it?

2. How can you be more honest about the healthy life that you’d like to live?  Do you need someone to hold you accountable?  Do you need someone to hold your hand?  Will a friend of family member be enough or do you need the help of a coach or other professional?

3. If consistency is a problem, find out if keeping a log of healthy habits is helpful.  Start with keeping a log of everything “Healthy” that you do for a week.  Look over it at the end and see if there were days when you did well and days when you didn’t do as well.  What patterns are there?
