Frequently Asked Questions

Please take a moment to read this before hiring Annette.

How long have you been a Certified Holistic Health Counselor and what led you to become one?

To answer this question, it’s probably best that I share with you the journey that brought me to where I am today, coaching people like you on how to eat and live in a way that really works for you.

Growing up, I was the youngest of three children.  I had two older brothers, my parents and a decently sized extended family that loved me and encouraged me.  Life was good.  I was a happy go lucky child, maybe a little on the quiet side, but for the most part, your average little girl.

I grew up surrounded by family and friends, always confident in whom I was, where I was headed and knowing that I had the support of people that loved me.  Thanks to my parents, I had access to a fantastic education that included college.  Who could ask for anything more?

Why was it then that I looked in the mirror during the spring of 2001 and didn’t recognize the person staring back at me?

Who was she?  What was she doing with her life and why was she so miserable?

This was a defining moment in my life.  I looked in the mirror and saw someone other than that happy go lucky little girl.  It was time for me to finally admit the truth to myself and to finally do something about it.

I wasn’t happy.  I was miserable and looking back, depressed.  I had finished college and started an internship where I felt like a fish out of water.  I had no place there and no right to be there.  What did I know?

Reality began to sink in.  I had gone through a bad break-up the previous fall.  As rough as that was, all it did was to remind me how I had yet to deal with the loss of my father four years earlier.

I convinced myself that I had nothing.  I had no job.  I had no money.  I had no friends and I was losing pieces of my family little by little.  I wasn’t going anywhere.

(Enter my pity party- a place that I willingly and convincingly stayed for longer than I care to admit.)

I did have one thing.  I had food.  Food gave me comfort.  Food kept me from crying myself to sleep.  Food kept me warm on those cold, dark nights when my demons came knocking at the door.  I was safe with food.  I felt so safe that I didn’t notice my weight creeping up.

That day when I looked in the mirror, I also looked at myself.  I had stepped on the scale and saw to my horror that I had almost 200 pounds on my five foot, five inch physically inactive frame.

I had left college closer to 145 pounds just four months earlier.

The moment I was able to admit the truth to myself was the moment that I was able to stop the steady decline I had set in motion by feeling sorry for myself, by feeling like a victim of life, by feeling that I had no control and I was worthless and by feeling that my self-worth was dictated to me by the people in my life rather than by myself.

To the point where I sound melodramatic, that moment saved my life.

I was able to overcome my demons and my negativity by first making the active decision that I wanted and deserved more.  I wanted to and needed to reclaim my life.

(I first attempted the quick fixes- the diet pills, the excessive exercise, the crazy limiting of calories and nutrients.  I even spent some time on the Lemonade drink diet.  If it promised results, I tried it.  Let’s just say this didn’t work.)

What worked for me?

I asked for help.  I asked for love and support from my family and friends.  I let myself take things slowly and made little changes one at a time.  I avoided any crash diets or extreme exercise.  I took baby steps and was able to make long lasting changes that way.  I struggled and I worked hard.  I had moments of complete failure but I didn’t let that deter me from my goals because soon after that failure, I had my little moments of success.  Little by little, the weight melted off of my body and I kept getting asked, “What did you do?  How come it was so easy for you to lose weight?”

Easy?  It wasn’t easy.  But it was do-able once I really decided that I was worth it.  How could I tell people that I hadn’t felt myself worthy of weight loss, real health or happiness?  How could I admit that truth to myself and to the people around me?  Maybe I didn’t have to- yet.

My answer was simple.  I was ready and willing to make the changes in my life so that I was healthier.  It wasn’t a question of what foods or what exercises were helping me to lose weight but rather that I was finally dedicated to making the change within myself.

I realized along the way that I wasn’t the only one who had gone through something like this.  I wasn’t the only one who had “stuff” preventing them from living the life they had imagined for themselves.  I wasn’t the only one who turned to something else like food for comfort instead of acknowledging what was really going on.  I realized that I wasn’t weak or worthless but that I had, for a short amount of time, given up.  As I looked around, I realized that I wasn’t the only one and that I wasn’t alone.

This was when I realized that my admitting my truth was not a weakness but rather one of my strongest attributes and that by admitting that I was human that I was capable of doing something really amazing and special.

As a result, I’ve dedicated the rest of my life and career to help other people improve their lives through nutrition, wellness and fitness.  I’ve found that it is my passion to help others come back to living a healthier and happier life after they’ve seen the other side.  It is part of my life’s work to help others heal their bodies, their minds and their souls and to help them realize that they deserve all the good in the world and more.

I took my passion and dedication to the next level and enrolled at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York City.   While I was there, I studied and completed formal training in Eastern and Western Nutrition as well as Holistic Health and Counseling.  Following graduation, I applied for and received my accreditation from the American Association of Drugless Practitioners.

Since then, I’ve worked with countless private clients to help them lose weight, regain their energy and vitality and finally figure out what they need to eat in order for each of them to live a healthier and happier life.  They complete their work with me feeling more confident about their lives, about their food choices and in their bodies.

What is a Holistic Health Counselor?

As a Holistic Health Counselor, I work with you to help you improve your overall health and happiness.  I offer guidance on specific lifestyle changes that will help you to achieve your goals and raise your overall quality of life.  I aim to help you feel better in your body by working first with your food choices and then with the aspects of your life that affect not only how and what you eat, but also how you live.

I don’t work with specific diets but rather help you to figure out what works best for your body and then teach you how to do the same for yourself.  I share quick, easy, healthy and delicious recipes with you as well as cooking tips to save you time and money in the kitchen.  I’ll work with you to make cooking fun and enjoyable.  Together we’ll experiment with new and different foods.  I will never ask you to deprive or starve yourself.  I don’t do it myself and could never ask you to do anything drastic that you don’t feel 100% comfortable with.

The best part of a being a Holistic Health Counselor is that I can offer a level of support that you’ve never had before.  You are never alone on your journey towards a healthier life; I will guide you and share insights on living a more balanced lifestyle.  I help you set goals and determine your priorities and will then help hold you accountable so that you achieve the goals you have set.  I will give you gentle and loving support while still keeping a firm hand when you need it.

I won’t let you make excuses but instead will help you work through any barriers or obstacles that come in your way.  I will help teach you how to love and care for yourself and how to create healthy boundaries around food, relationships and your environment.

I work in a “Holistic” manner meaning that I take the entire person into account when helping them determine a plan of action and setting their goals.  I don’t take just food into account when guiding towards greater health but also all those parts of you that make you special and unique while also helping you to become healthier and happier.

While working with the whole person, I am able to help them take their goals and break them into smaller, more manageable pieces.  This way we are set up for success in a way that makes gradual and long lasting progress towards your goals.  I don’t work with quick fixes and will help you overcome any challenges you might come across as you work towards your healthier life.  I am dedicated to your success.

How are you different from a licensed nutritionist or dietitian?

A licensed nutritionist or dietitian is trained to assess the nutritional needs of individuals.  They establish priorities, goals and objectives that will meet the nutritional needs of their patients.  They provide nutritional counseling in health and disease.  The nutritional advice that I give does not in any way replace that of your physician or registered dietitian or nutritionist.

Annette Nack and Bee Balanced Health & Wellness encourage you to continue visiting and being treated by your healthcare professionals, including without limitation, your physician.  Annette Nack and Bee Balanced Health & Wellness does not act in the capacity of a doctor, licensed dietician-nutritionist, massage therapist, psychologist or other licensed or registered professional.  Annette Nack and Bee Balanced Health & Wellness does not provide health care, medical or nutrition therapy services and will not diagnose, treat or cure in any manner whatsoever any disease, condition or other physical or mental ailment of the human body.

Who are your clients exactly?

My clients are mostly women who are tired of not getting results from the diets and other lifestyle changes they try.  If they have gotten results, then they weren’t able to maintain the strict limitations they needed to initially get results.  My clients don’t want to deprive themselves in order to look or feel the way they want to.  They have usually hit their threshold of frustration and don’t know where to turn to next.  They need support and turn to me for it.

My clients often look to lose extra body weight, to regain their lost energy, to conquer their cravings and eliminate their emotional eating.  They are tired of trying everything and anything and not getting anywhere.  They want to improve their overall health and enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

What type of personality do you work best with and what is expected of me?

I work best with clients who are ready to take the next step and invest in themselves totally to improve the quality of their health and their lives.  I work with a lot of busy professionals, especially women looking to balance out taking care of themselves and their families while still working!  I enjoy working with people who are not willing to settle anymore and are ready to take a leap of faith to do something that will give them the results they are desperately looking for.

I ask that my clients keep an open mind and remain honest about their progress.  Please be patient and trust me.  Some results will happen sooner than others and that’s okay.  I don’t work with quick fixes but rather with long-lasting changes.

I ask that my clients commit to themselves first.  I ask them to create the time and space that they need to make these long-lasting changes.

For what type of person is this program NOT going to work?

This program will not work for someone who is not willing to put in the time and energy to make positive changes happen in their own life.  This program will not work for people who need to follow a strict meal plan and need to know exactly what they need to eat when it comes down to calories and fat, protein and carbohydrate grams.

This program is not geared towards people with very serious medical conditions.

I also choose NOT to work with people who aren’t ready and willing to make the commitment to invest time, energy and money into improving themselves.

What exactly is The Balanced Living, Better Living SystemTM and what does it include?

The Balanced Living, Better Living SystemTM is the system that I developed and use with each and every one of my clients to help them achieve their goals and live healthier and happier lives.  This system has been the key to creating lasting change in my client’s lives.

When using The Balanced Living, Better Living SystemTM, my clients know that they are not in for the magic bullet, one size fits all, quick fix.  My system takes time to work but the changes and results are worth the time and effort that they have put in ten times over.  Over time, my clients can expect to feel better in their body, have increased energy, manage their stress more effectively and enjoy their lives more.

Here is what my system looks like in a nutshell.

1. Choose to make yourself, your life, your health and wellness the number one priority.

The very first step is usually the hardest.  You decide that today is the day to make a positive change in your life.  You are the top priority.  You agree to make yourself and your health the most important investment you have.  We work through a few exercises that will reiterate that there are specific aspects of your life, your health and you that need to change.  We will identify these aspects and then take these pieces one at a time to ensure gradual but consistent progress towards a happier and healthier life.

2.  Get a clear picture of where you are and where you want to go.

Next we will find out the “who, what, where” of you.  We will take the all important step of setting goals and determining your priorities.  We will work through obstacles and identify the boundaries in your life that are and are not working.  We will find your sources of support as well as identify your inner demons and saboteurs.

3. Eat well to live well.

We will move next to the food piece.  What are you eating, when are you eating, how are you eating?  We will address the quality of food that you eat as well as the basic nutritional value of what you are currently eating.  Changes in eating will be based on your specific goals and needs.  We will examine how seasonal eating and local eating play a role in our lives.  Ultimately we will determine what you need to eat to be able to live your best life.

4. Start moving and keep moving.

The next piece is movement.  Exercise in any form is critical to your health.  Not all of us are destined to be runners or bikers or swimmers or yogis but there is some sort of movement out there that is both enjoyable and beneficial for your body.  We will work on the obstacles and barriers that are standing in your way of exercise and moving.  We will also evaluate what you are currently doing and determine if you are doing too much, too little or need something new.

5. Experiment with Food and Cooking.

It’s time to throw on an apron and get back into the kitchen.  We will focus on food specific experiments.  Trying new foods and new ways of preparing them is always a little frightening but I will work with you to make the prospect of YOU in the kitchen as non-intimidating as possible.  The focus will be on easy, fun and healthy food.  Cooking is optional, really.

6. Know where you stand.

This will be our first re-evaluation.  We will cover food, cooking and movement first.  I will empower you to take an honest look at the rest of your life.  We will address healthy relationships, healthy career choices, social situations and other lifestyle choices.  We will take a serious look at the energy suckers in your life and begin to build plans on keeping the best possible people, things and places in your life.

7. Change how you eat.

We will continue talking about food but this time your routines, habits and patterns around food and how you eat.  If emotional eating is one of your hot buttons, we will definitely work on breaking those negative patterns.  We will talk about satiety cues and what cravings really mean.  We will re-program your ritual of eating so that you use the good china and silverware just because you can and not just because it’s a holiday.

8. Spoil and Love yourself.

Do you really love yourself?  We will discover the truth here.  We will find out what love really is and how it plays a significant role in your life and in your overall happiness.  We will find out what truly makes you happy and what you need in your life NO MATTER WHAT.  We will discuss the critical role of self care and why you need more than you are currently doing.  If you haven’t been spoiling yourself, I will give you the permission you need to really go out and do it!

9. Set boundaries around food, relationships, and more.

Together we will create non-cringe worthy boundaries around food, relationships and other aspects of your life.  We will learn together how you can best manage stress and use everything that we have learned up until now to start living the life that you’ve imagined for yourself for so many years.  Boundaries will not only keep the “bad” things out but will also help keep the “good” in.  We will discuss how the creation of boundaries can add years to your life and improve the quality of the people, places and things you allow into your life.

10. Clean and clear out the cobwebs.

After we’ve stirred up the dust, it’s time to break out the broom and dustpan.  With my guidance, we will work on cleaning and clearing those aspects of your life that you feel need it.  We will work on your environment to maintain a happy and healthy home, work space and more.  You might be tempted to really take a broom and do some tidying up.

11. Nourish your body, mind and soul.

We will take a look at the things that nourish us.  We rely not only on food but also creativity and spirituality to feed us.  We will set up habits and routines that will add more dimension into your life.  This will help you to not only live more in line with what you want but also to encourage the healthy habits you’ve worked so hard to adopt.

12. Rinse, repeat, and re-evaluate.

Since you will continue to live for a long, long time especially after becoming healthier, you will need to learn how to take all that you’ve learned and find ways to keep these new patterns in your life.  You will learn the techniques you’ll need to constantly re-evaluate and readjust the ways you eat, sleep, work and play to maintain this new high level of wellness.  This is for a lifetime, not just for today.  You will be able to maintain all the results of your hard work and learn how to set and attain new and realistic goals.

These are the steps to The Balanced Living, Better Living SystemTM that I developed through working with my clients and with myself to create long-lasting and positive changes.  In addition to these 12 steps, you will learn more about food, cooking and lifestyle changes that will help you achieve your goals.  Most importantly, you will learn how to make better and healthier choices for a lifetime and have my support every step of the way.  I will be here to support and guide you through this journey towards better health and wellness.

Does this really work?

Absolutely!  All of my clients have made and continue to make amazing changes to their lives and are usually so amazed because those changes happen in such a short amount of time.  These aren’t just short-lived changes either, these lifestyle changes last!  It’s something that they and I are incredibly proud of.

With support from me and your dedication to yourself, you can do anything you set your mind to!  Amazing things can happen!

What results can I expect?

You can expect many changes as a result of working with me.  Among them are:

  • Renewed enthusiasm for living well and improving your life

  • Finally make the positive changes in your life that you’ve been wanting to make

  • A greater love and acceptance of your body and what it can do for you
  • More love, gratitude and happiness- you enjoy your life more!

How quickly can I expect results?

Your results will depend on your specific situation and also on how much effort you put in towards achieving your goal- meaning the time you spend working on your specific recommendations and the consistency in which you follow through on them.

Many clients start to experience changes after one or two sessions.  They may notice an improvement in their energy levels, better and deeper sleep, lessening of cravings and a positive change in body weight, among other things.

How can I guarantee myself that I will reach my health goals?

The best guarantee that you can give yourself is having open lines of communication with me.  Please give me feedback on what’s working and what isn’t working for you.  Also let me know what you need the most immediate support around.  Your honesty will ensure that you get what you need from me to help you reach your goals in the most effective way possible.

Along the same lines, you also need to be honest with yourself.  Know and understand your limits but also realize that your limits and boundaries today can and will change with your honesty and dedication to this journey.  Your honesty to yourself is critical.  Knowing and understanding this now will save you time, energy and frustration.

Share with me everything that you experience during our time together.  By doing this, we will be well on our way to achieving your goals easily and (almost) painlessly!

In other words, I will keep you accountable in the best way I know how around the things that you tell me you need the most.  Plain and simple.

How will we work together and what does the program entail?

During the course of our work together, you will receive support from me during our counseling sessions together, either in-person, over the phone or over the computer through Skype.  Our sessions will center on your immediate concerns first, your goals and other issues that are most important to you.  You decide on the pace of our sessions together and the program is 100% customized for you and your personal situation.  I will support you, guide you and give lifestyle suggestions to help you reach your goals.  We will also re-visit our work from the previous session.

After each session, you will receive from me detailed and personalized recommendations.  Think of it as your “homework” for our next session together.  I will also send you specific resources, recipes and cooking tips that I believe will help you reach your goals.  Everything will relate back to your sessions with me and your overall goals for your program.

All program options will include your own personalized “Healthy Living” binder.  In it, you’ll be able to keep all of your session notes complete with personalized recommendations, your program forms and all of the helpful healthy living recipes, tips and resources that I’ll give you over the course of our working together.

Some programs also include additional support in the way of unlimited phone support, unlimited email support and additional Educational Resources.

How long are the programs?

I offer three different programs and each of those programs last anywhere from 3-6 months.

I have found that it has taken each of us a very long time to adopt our current lifestyle and only consistent, long term effort can help us to change those habits into healthier and happier ones.  I have experimented with different time frames and found that 3-6 months programs are ideal for making positive, long-term changes that we can maintain.

I am as dedicated to your success as you are and therefore will ONLY work in a minimum of a 3 month program.  I want you to get what you came for and walk away when we are finished working with each other confident that you have made an incredible investment in yourself that will continue to reap benefits many years down the line.

Do people continue past the initial 3-6 month programs?

Yes, many of my clients love receiving on-going support.  They find that they accomplish their initial goals by the end of their first 3-6 months but want to keep going and take their health and their lives to the next level.  I always welcome the opportunity to continue working with my clients.

What are your coaching programs like?

You have two different program options.  The programs differ according to how quickly you’d like to see results, how much time and access you’d like to have with me and your budget.

No matter what program option you choose, you will receive your own personalized “Healthy Living” binder.  In it, you’ll be able to keep all of your session notes complete with personalized recommendations, your program forms and all of the helpful healthy living recipes, tips and resources that I’ll give you over the course of our working together.

This is the only program that offers unlimited access to me.

This program includes:

This program includes:

  • One, 60 minute session with me per month, including detailed and personalized recommendations for the duration of your program
  • Resources and Recipes emailed to you after each session
  • My continued high level of support

Where are you located?  Do you only work with local clients?

I am located in Nanuet, New York but I work with clients both in-person, over the phone and over the internet through Skype.

My clients are located both locally and across the United States.

I have found that coaching by phone is incredibly effective and is usually easier to fit into a busy schedule.  I have also been able to develop incredible relationships with clients that I have never met face-to-face.

In terms of results, I find similar results with phone counseling as I do with in-person counseling.

As a way of being as flexible as I can for my clients, I also offer a virtual or online option through Skype.

If you live in the Rockland or Westchester County area, you can choose in-person counseling, phone counseling or Skype counseling.

Do you accept credit cards?

Yes, I do.  In fact, I only accept credit cards.  You can choose to pay on a monthly basis or you can pay in full.  It’s your choice!

Clients who choose to pay in full also enjoy a 5% bookkeeping discount.

Ok, I know which program I want.  How do I get started?

That’s great news!  You’ve taken a huge step and decided to make you, your life and your health a top priority.  You are about to embark on an amazing journey!

If you’re ready right now, then the next step is simple!

Email me at annette@whatthebleepdoieat.com or call me at (845) 729-7326 to schedule your complimentary “get acquainted” phone session.  If you live in the Rockland or Westchester County area, then we can meet in person.

Prior to our “get acquainted” session, you will receive via email a very brief questionnaire.  Answering these questions before our complimentary “get acquainted” session is essential to both your and my success.  I promise that it’s painless.

We will use our first session to discuss your current situation and your specific goals.  We will also double-check that working together is a good fit for both of us.  I choose my clients very carefully so that your future success is in the best hands possible.  You will then tell me which program you decided would work best to meet your goals.

From here, we set our start date as well as schedule the remainder of your sessions.  After the conclusion of our “get acquainted” session, I’ll send out your welcome packet via email.

In your welcome packet, you’ll find a client information and goal sheet among other things.  Please complete these forms and return it to me at least 2 days prior to our first counseling session.

I will use this information to customize a plan specifically for you, for your goals and for your specific concerns.  I am committed to making sure that you get the results that you are looking for.  The best part about all of this is that by having all of your information back to me before our first counseling session, we can hit the ground running in your very first session with me.  How amazing is that?

If I’m not sure I’m ready to get started, how can I sample your work at a low cost or no cost to see if it’s the right solution for me?

There are several ways you can do that.

We can schedule a complimentary “get acquainted” session by phone.  We can discuss your specific situation and see if I can help.  You can email me at annette@whatthebleepdoieat.com or call me at (845) 729-7326 to schedule this appointment.  If you live in the Rockland or Westchester County area, we can meet in person.

You can also attend one of my upcoming teleclasses or workshops.  Most of them are free and you will get a sense of how I work with my clients and my philosophy of nutrition and wellness.  This is a perfect way to see exactly what we can accomplish in a very short time.  Imagine what could happen over a 6 month program with me!  Please click here to see my upcoming schedule.

Another great way to get a sense of what I’m all about is to subscribe to my bi-monthly Ezine.  My “Health Buzz E-zine” is chock-full of helpful tips and tricks for living a healthy and happier life without living on a millionaire’s salary.  I’ll share the secrets to stress-free weight loss and guilt-free living.  If that sounds good, then feel free to sign up in the contact box below.

I have a family and a busy life.  Although I want to reach my health goals, I don’t have much time to spare.  How much time do I need?

The best thing about working with me is that your time commitment is much less than you’d think.  If you can spare ONE hour a week, then you can make the first steps to improving your life.

Just one hour a week can set you on the path to a healthier and happier life BUT understand that by dedicating just one hour a week, your results will be slower in coming.  If you can spare 2-3 or more hours a week, you can anticipate quicker results.

The best question to ask yourself is just how badly do you want to change and see results?

I find that that I tend to make time for the things I want the most.  Chances are you’re just like me!  If you really want it, you’ll make the time you need.

Okay, I’m ready to do this for myself but I have a couple of additional questions.  Can I call you?

That’s great!  It sounds like you are ready to make a positive change in your life!  If you have questions, please feel free to email me at annette@whatthebleepdoieat.com or call me at (845)729-7326 and we can schedule a complimentary “get acquainted” phone session.  If you happen to live in the Rockland or Westchester County area, we can meet in person.
